The development of software solutions begins for the business informatics specialist with consultation and planning meetings directly with the customer. First you analyse the initial operational and organisational situation in detail. On the basis of this information, you summarise the requirements for the future IT system and create a concept for the new system. If information technologies are already available, you can adapt them. Sometimes it is necessary to introduce a completely new system. For a successful project, your specialist knowledge, logical thinking and the ability to communicate well, establish contact with the customer and work in a group are very important.
Business informatics specialists are employed in companies in almost all sectors, public authorities and institutions that handle their business processes with the help of information technology. But with a degree in business informatics, you are also in great demand in companies that develop IT-supported information systems and in consulting firms. You can also take on a position as a manager.

At the Interface between Business and IT
The study of business informatics combines the advantages of the classic courses of study in business administration and computer science. As a business informatics specialist, you work at the interface between business administration and information/communication technology. For your job, you need both technical knowledge and business know-how. You plan and develop the business information and communication systems that improve the flow of a company's business processes or make them possible in the first place. From an IT point of view, you can perform administrative tasks such as payroll accounting, production control or customer relationship management (CRM). After completing your studies, you will be able to analyse practical tasks and prepare them in such a way that they can be processes by an information or communication system.
CHE University Ranking 2023/24: Students placed the Business Information Systems degree program in the top group of the renowned CHE ranking (published by "Die Zeit") for degree programs in the field of business and economics.

2014 | Business Informatics
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
After completing my bachelor’s degree in Business Informatics in Deggendorf, I was drawn to nearby Munich. I had a very specific goal in mind: to found my own company. I wanted to find out whether the vision I had for my future actually suited me—a sort of prototyping process for my own career path.
As is typical with prototyping, I sought to figure this out as quickly as possible while minimizing risk. Consequently, while launching the business, I enrolled in the consecutive Master’s program in Business Informatics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). I ultimately graduated with excellent results, a journey that included a stint at the renowned Stanford University in Silicon Valley to work on my master’s thesis. However, we wound up the company after just under two years.
The end of the story? Although the business didn't succeed, it became clear that nothing suited me better than entrepreneurship. I had to learn that setbacks are the rule rather than the exception. Dealing with them is a personal challenge—one that makes one’s life journey so diverse and exciting.
Following my master’s studies, I dedicated myself entirely to self-employment and founded INNOSPOT GmbH. The company leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data Analytics to make the global startup landscape transparent and accessible to established businesses. We scale innovation worldwide by connecting companies with the best startups, enabling them to drive innovation together and create positive value for the world. I have been doing this since 2017 as founder and CEO, working alongside a team of 12 employees.
A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE: REFLECTING ON YOUR TIME AT DIT
My time studying in Deggendorf was incredibly formative; I learned so much about myself. Originally, studying in Deggendorf was a huge dream—one that had seemed very distant for years. While attending the BOS (vocational high school), I would often stroll along the university embankment, imagining what it would be like to study there one day. That dream came true and opened doors for me that I hadn't even dared to imagine as a teenager.
During my studies, I tried to soak up everything I possibly could. I have fond memories of that educational and fantastic time spent in the Student Council, the Faculty Board, and on the executive committee of WI-Project e.V., as well as great evenings out with fellow students in Deggendorf’s nightlife. One particularly vivid memory is the "flood of the century," when a fellow student and I founded the student relief initiative "Deggendorf räumt auf" (Deggendorf Cleans Up); through this effort, the university's students made an incredibly valuable contribution to the city and the people of Deggendorf.
In terms of my academic experience, I also have very strong, positive memories of my semester abroad at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). My time in liberal California shifted my perspective on many things and—alongside all my other activities during my studies—gave me the great confidence that I could make a real difference in the world.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS?
1: Just do it! Far too many truly intelligent people I’ve met along the way can imagine starting a business but are still waiting for "the idea." My own experience with INNOSPOT taught me that you don’t need to have "the idea" to realize your dreams as an entrepreneur. The team you work with to turn an idea into reality is far more important than the idea itself. That’s why we took a completely new approach when founding INNOSPOT: team first, idea second.
2: Reflect. Only after I’ve actually done something and reflected on it do I gain a solid understanding of what I enjoy and whether I have (or have developed) a passion for it. Life is a vast collection of experiments; just like in chemistry, many experiments go wrong, some succeed, and a few are groundbreaking. However, I can only gain these experiences if I try out as many things as possible myself—whether it’s internships, student jobs, a semester abroad, or starting my own company—and then honestly evaluate them for myself. That’s why I encourage everyone: try out as much as you can during your studies. Make the most of this unique playground to discover what truly fulfills you, with minimal personal risk. And always have fun doing it :)
