As early as 2022, members of the Psychosocial Working Group (PSAG) of the Deggendorf district approached us with a request to establish a degree programme in Social Work at our faculty, with a view to addressing the shortage of skilled workers in the long term. This was followed by an initial needs assessment, in which 22 organisations took part. The result: there are currently 25 full-time vacancies – in five years’ time, there are estimated to be over 130 vacancies in the district alone. A second survey in May 2023, conducted among further organisations in Passau, Dingolfing-Landau, Regen, Straubing, Pfarrkirchen and Kelheim, revealed a further need for just under 70 vacancies at present, with an upward trend expected in the coming years. In contrast, there are approximately 700 pupils in Years 2 and 3 across the wider catchment area who are currently attending FOS/BOS schools specialising in social studies. This gave rise to the idea of offering a degree programme in Social Work at DIT

The degree programme comprehensively covers the broad field of social work, from the cradle to the grave. All aspects of the programme are designed to equip students to advise and support people facing a wide variety of problems – for example, psychosocial difficulties, physical or mental illness affecting a family member, debt or addiction. The content of a degree in Social Work may vary depending on the university, but as a rule, the fundamentals of sociology, education, psychology, social policy, general public law and social law form a significant part of the curriculum.

On the one hand, the degree programme is aimed at A-level graduates who are interested in interactive, people-centred work. On the other hand, it is also designed to appeal to career changers who wish to further their professional development. No A-levels are required for this, but three years’ professional experience is necessary.

The terms are usually used interchangeably, and the qualifications are also regarded as equivalent. Social work is actually the umbrella term for social workers and social educators. Whilst social workers generally deal with areas such as addiction or parents who are struggling to cope, social educators tend to focus on the fields of upbringing and education.
