I have the pleasure to present my master's thesis, "Analysis of the Impact of GILLS (Gas Insufflation-Less Laparoscopic Surgery) in Selected Rural Hospitals in India." The journey has been fantastic, with hard challenge, incredible learning, and profound triumph. Here I’d like to contemplate this life-changing experience with the crowd at DIT and motivate everybody for similar trips through the exciting waters of science.
Birth of an Idea and great guidance
It was Dr. Gnanaraja Jesuidia who helped me develop my thesis. His early findings throughout our chats sparked a drive to explore new surgical methods. GILLS (Gas Insufflation-Less Laparoscopic Surgery) could change rural India's surgical landscape due to the high demand for effective surgery and limited resources. My research focused on this subject. I presented my early ideas at the Global Public Health Mini Conference on December 8, 2023, which boosted this notion. After obtaining positive responses, I'm even more confident of this research's potential.
Strong research proposal writing was the first major difficulty. I had to consult academics, read a lot, and refine my research topics. Dr. Gnanaraja’s consistent support and encouragement helped me turn my concept into a viable research project. His support and honest criticism were invaluable during this crucial time.
When creating the proposal, Dr. Georgi Chaltkiyan, my supervisor at the European Campus Rottal-Inn (ECRI), gave me explicit guidelines. He helped me outline and rigorize my ideas with his scientific understanding and systematic approach. Dr. Chaltkiyan's guidance ensured the proposal met academic criteria, which led to its approval. His unfailing support and words of encouragement kept me going.
At this point I`d like to emphasize, that both, Drs. Chaltkiyan and Jesuidia have provided exceptional mentorship. Their experience helped me navigate the murkiest waters, their encouragement elevated me throughout doubts, and their unfailing conviction in my potential kept me going. Their advice and support shaped my thesis, research, and professional development. That’s why I’ll be thankful forever. My research skills improved so much under their direction, and I achieved academic accomplishment I never thought possible.
Hard work and personal feelings
The laborious data analysis tested my analytical skills and patience. My initial assumptions were not always supported by evidence, so I had to adjust my approach. Drafting the thesis and presenting results clearly with checking for evidence in parallel were difficult. The final output is the culmination of multiple editing and feedback sessions.
My path has challenged me, pushed me far beyond my comfort zone, and changed me in ways I never imagined. The hours spent researching, analysing, and writing were a personal journey of growth and discovery. I struggled with complex data, technical issues, juggling research and other obligations. Every challenge I overcame showed my resilience and dedication.
Like a sailor exploring new waters, I set sail on the inquiry with excitement and apprehension. Late nights, piles of data, and a never-ending search for solutions seemed like sailing through a hurricane. I barely slept the night before the deadline due to adrenaline and weariness. After hitting "submit" on submission day, I felt so accomplished and relieved. However, difficulty taught me to use my genuine motivation. The day before submission is critical, therefore it's normal to feel apprehensive. Focusing on practical steps and controlling your emotions can help you finish this task. This chapter ends with my thesis submission, but fresh chances and endeavours await.
Results and impact
Several fascinating and relevant findings from my newly submitted thesis, are exciting to discuss. Hospitals using the GILLS system experienced a nearly 200 percent increase in surgical procedures, compared to a 20 percent increase in the hospitals not using GILLS during the same period. This suggests that GILLS significantly enhance surgical efficiency and capacity. This study could transform remote healthcare delivery. This research aims to prove that GILLS is as successful with less resources. Further studies are recommended to understand the specific features of GILLS contributing to these improvements and its implementation
The project, led by Dr. GnanarajaJ, aims to improve surgical treatment, safety, and healthcare delivery in India and maybe the world. By collecting, evaluating, and publishing data systematically, it could improve surgical innovation and healthcare equity and change society in many ways. They provide proctorship training, publication of findings, and conferences and seminars to allied healthcare professionals and local surgeons. GILLS-enabled hospitals may affect global health practices. The research has a global influence since other countries can learn from India's surgical remedies to similar healthcare issues.
Thanks
I appreciate everyone who helped make it happen. Dr. Chaltkiyan and Gnanaraja J., my principal and co-supervisors, I appreciate your guidance. We value Henning Mothes's guidance. Henning Mothes deserves praise for his continuous feedback. Dr. Nikita Mokal, your support is indispensable, and you have my undying thankfulness. Rahul and Mukul Mallik, my elder brothers, and my father make up the group. Your unwavering belief in the study and its mission have been an inspiration.
