Coronavirus Anxiety: My How-To Story! The global virus has undoubtedly been taking its major toll on most citizens of Earth. The uncertainty and hassle brought by this pandemic has proved severe difficulties and challenges not only to the professional but also to the daily lives of many people. Amongst those are international students who might find themselves under extreme pressure being far away from home while, at the same time, experiencing a lack of communication.
So how can one actually cope up with and overcome coronavirus anxiety? Check out my story of divergent know-hows to stay healthy and optimistic, both mentally and physically.
1. Managing your routine
After my flight back home was unexpectedly cancelled, my part-time job was interrupted, places started shutting down and people were told to stay at home to avoid personal contact under new lockdown regulations, I started to feel anxious. Not only because my normal routines were forcefully changed but also because I had no idea how I could spend the upcoming months staying at home and not doing what I was used to on a daily basis. There would be no more coffee talk on weekends, no cinema visits every other night and not seeing those familiar faces in class or at the campus. It took me a few long days to acquaint myself with the new situation and to realise that I cannot let days pass by without making the most of it. It could be the best opportunity yet to actually start investing in yourself, digging in a new hobby or simply to get your hands on doing that crazy thing which you have been dreaming to do for years if only you could spare a little more time. Indeed, it is time for making changes.
Instead of waking up at 8 am to go to class, I made myself maintain the same routine for diligent productivity, even at a completely different location. After a few sips of my regular creamy Latte, I started my day with a small to-do list. By noting down what work should be done based on its distinctive priorities, it helped me to remind myself of tasks, which must be achieved during the day. Anything from making your bed, washing your clothes to finishing your assignments according to deadlines could be added to this list. You will never know how much of a process you could make once you create a comprehensive and coherent plan. Keep in mind to assign a time frame for each task. More arduous exercises such as writing research papers or reading scholarly journals should be spared more time and for a time in the day when you are most energetic and attentive.
2. Developing your knowledge
You always wanted to try painting or to study computer programming but never really had the chance? Then why don’t you use this time to make your aspirations come true? A handful number of websites are offering free online courses in various intellectual fields like engineering, IT coding, marketing, business management, data science and more. Most of these provisions originate from elite universities ranging from Harvard, Yale, MIT or from well-known specialists such as Microsoft or Google. The courses usually come with a certificate. What could be better than the access to world-class education with just a single mouse click right? Below are some of the websites that I personally recommend[1].
As for myself, I am enrolling in a class from Yale university called “The Science of Well-being”. I highly suggest this course to students who wish to cultivate, improve or reinforce their positive vibes and self-confidence. The course offers informative knowledge and useful tips in how to conquer stress, uneasiness and anxiety not only through this challenging time but also through every struggles of life.
