Bavarian clothes go along with the dialect like Beer with Wurst!

The Bavarian dialect can be a bit different than the usual German you encounter and learn in your classes. Living in Bavaria, it will be extremely useful for you to know these words because you will surely come across them in your daily life.

Servus! Wie gehts?

Ooh calm down! No, we are not going to speak German (well, not yet). Actually, we are going to talk about this beautiful and exotic (and super strong) German dialect, the famous ,,Bavarian”.

When I was about to come to Germany, I heard so many people telling me that the Bavarian dialect is super strong and hard to understand. I thought they were exaggerating, until I actually got here and heard myself how it sounded. Well, it turns out that, yes it sure is strong and hard to understand, but after a while I kind of get it and now I am able to share with you my 3 favorite Bavarian words (ooh how German, uh?!)
 

1. Servus!
This first one I am 100% sure that you already heard it. It is totally common that the greeting differs around a country. So, in Germany, the Bavarian way to greet each other is saying the typical: Servus. Forget the Hallo and Guten Tags that you learned in your german course (not that they don’t use it at all) but if you want to sound more like a local, it’s better to use this one. To be honest, now I am so used to saying “Servus” all the time, that I got super confused when I went to Hamburg and people over there were saying “Moin moin” and I always answered with “Servus” (of course they thought I was an alien).
 

2. Bassdscho!
This is actually a good one. Bassdscho is the bavarian way of saying “Passt schon”, which basically means “It’s okay”. When someone said it to me at first, I panicked haha. At that moment, I thought I had understood a bit of German, but I actually had no idea what to say next. In my opinion, Bassdscho is the funniest word out of these 3 and the most useful one, you can simply say and sound like a local.
 

3. A Hoibe!
Last but not least (at all), A Hoibe! Have you ever heard this or have you ever said it? I swear, from now on, your life will be much easier. Because this word means “A Beer”, yes, this is the Bavarian style to ask for a beer. I actually consider it to be more fun and cooler, than only saying “Ein bier, bitte”. And I guess I don’t need to say that it’s my favorite, right? Well, that’s all for today. I hope you had fun and I made your life a bit easier when it comes to understanding the Bavarian dialect.
