Birgit Bauer is a prominent German patient advocate, digital health communicator, and living with multiple sclerosis (diagnosed in 2005). In 2007 she launched her influential blog “Fast normal! Mein Leben mit MS,” which has since become a key European voice on MS and healthcare.

Over more than 15 years, Bauer has advised NGOs, industry, startups, and public institutions on patient communication and digital health. She co-founded Manufaktur für Antworten UG, working as a social media and communication strategist.

A key focus of her work is Data Saves Lives Germany (DSL DE), which she initiated under her non-profit european digital health academy gGmbH.  As founding project coordinator, she aims to foster patient trust and literacy in the use and sharing of health data. She also serves on the editorial board of Data Saves Lives and chairs its Pilot Toolkit Group.

Her roles extend into policy and international health data governance: she previously co-led the Digital Media & Health topic group at the EMA’s Patient & Consumer Working Party, and she was appointed in 2025 to the OECD expert group “Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT)”. Bauer has been recognized as a HIMSS Future50 Patient Leader (2021)  and in 2024 received the Female Transformers in Healthcare award in the “Volunteer” category.

Through her dual identity as patient and professional, Bauer bridges personal lived experience and strategic advocacy—demonstrating how patients can actively shape the digital health landscape.
